If you've never hired a painter before, not knowing what to expect can be the most stressful part. Here's exactly how it goes with us.
A lot of people have never hired a painter, and the biggest worry isn't the paint — it's the unknown. Who moves the furniture? How much do I need to do? Will my house be a disaster while you're here? Here's a straight walk-through of what working with us actually looks like, start to finish.
The free estimate
It starts with us coming to look, in person and for free. We walk the space with you, talk through what you want, and give you an honest number based on the real work in front of us. If we're booked out a few months, you'll hear that up front rather than being strung along.
Getting ready: what we ask of you
This is the part people worry about most, and the answer is: not much. For interiors, we typically ask that you move the small things — the knickknacks, photos, and small items off surfaces. But if you need help with any of it, we'll help. We can move furniture if needed, and we can even help with the small things if that's easier for you. We're not going to make you do the hard work so we can rush through cheaper.
For exteriors, you usually don't need to do anything at all if you don't want to. Some folks choose to move a few things out of our way, some don't. Either way is fine.
The details we handle
The little things are where a job shows its quality, so we take care of them:
- We remove outlet covers and switch plates before painting, then put them back after
- We leave picture nails in if you want them left; if you'd rather we fill the holes, we'll pull the nails and patch them
- We cover and protect your furniture and floors before any paint comes out
- We handle the prep — washing, patching, sanding, priming — as part of the job, not an extra
Little decisions like the nails are yours to make. Just tell us how you want it, and that's how we'll do it.
While we work
We set up, protect the space, do all the prep, and paint. You can live in your house while we're in it — we clean up as we go rather than leaving a mess to trip over each evening. Our whole approach is built around being the kind of painters you're comfortable having in your home, which is why so much of our work comes from neighbors recommending us to neighbors.
When we finish
When the painting's done, we clean up after ourselves — and for interiors, we typically even vacuum the area we painted so it's clean when we leave. We put the outlet covers back, walk the job with you, and make sure you're happy before we call it finished. The goal is that the only thing left behind is the fresh paint.
How payment works — no deposit up front
Here's something that sets us apart, and it matters more than people expect: we don't usually ask for a deposit. You're not handing us money before we've done anything. On most jobs, we don't collect until we're roughly halfway through and you can already see the work taking shape — so if anything, we take about half once we're close to half done.
On really big jobs we'll sometimes break it into thirds, but always the same way: we do a portion of the work first, then collect for what we've completed. You're paying for progress you can see, never for a promise. In a trade where plenty of outfits want a big check before they start, we think earning the money as we go is just the honest way to do it.
The bottom line
Hiring us should be easy: we come look for free, we handle the prep and cleanup, and we ask very little of you beyond moving a few small things if you'd like. If you've been putting off a project because you weren't sure what you were signing up for, now you know. Call or text and we'll get you on the schedule.
